Order Founder and Missionary.
De Foucauld was born in Strasbourg. After an adventurous period as a soldier and explorer, he joined a Trappist monastery in 1890. Seeking even greater austerity, he left to become a servant of the Poor Clares in the Holy Land. He was ordained priest in 1901 and then he settled in Algeria, first at Beni-Abbès and then in the remote Hoggar mountains.
There he lived the life of a hermit, dedicating himself to prayer and charity. In 1916, for obscure reasons, he was assassinated. Although he attracted no disciples in his lifetime, in 1923 his papers were published. This led to the setting up of various orders based on his Rule.
These include the Little Brothers of Jesus and the Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart (both founded in 1933), the Little Sisters of Jesus (1939), the Little Brothers of the Gospel (1958) and the Little Sisters of the Gospel (1965). In all these orders, the members share in the life of the poor, earning their living by manual labour and maintaining a deep spirituality.
